Chasing peace and self-acceptance, reclusive Betty is forced to confront her troubled past on the 26th anniversary of a fatal car accident. Every Line is an intimate portrait of hope and renewal in the face of complex trauma.
I met Betty at a supported art exhibition in regional Victoria. Her work was raw and vulnerable, and so was she. Having lived with my own mental health struggles, I felt an immediate connection with the pain expressed through her art.
In our conversations, Betty shared her frustrations with how medical institutions had perpetuated her feelings of otherness and, at times, prolonged her suffering. Her diagnoses, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, had come to define how others interacted with her. To cope, she lived an isolated life on a bush property, yet beneath this isolation was a deep desire to be seen, heard, and understood.
The filmmaking process became a collaboration between observational documentary and carefully crafted scenes that honoured Betty’s emotional truth. Often, it meant putting the camera down to simply listen. I am not a mental health professional, but I believe in the healing power of presence and validation.
For me, Every Line is more than Betty’s story, it is an exploration of how community, creativity, and small moments of connection can nurture resilience. I hope audiences see themselves in Betty’s journey and are reminded of the everpresent potential for hope and renewal.
